A More Spiritual Life: A Broader View

In search of greater meaning, purpose, and inspiration, more and more people are supplementing their cherished and long held traditions—either religious or humanist—with “spiritual” dimensions.  My own practice, described in Spiritual Values for Our Time, includes less traditional ideas like these.

  • A focus on values and character  (virtues and/or principles) instead of beliefs.

  • More contemporary sources of wisdom, often more relevant and useful than our exclusive reliance upon ancient sources.

  • Individual responsibility to clarify and embrace ideals and values most resonant to each person.

  • A more down-to earth practice that emphasizes our challenge to sacralize all life in this world.

  • An emphasis on transformation and personal growth—rather than transcendence or salvation.

  • Welcoming deeper provocative questions to complement our more traditional answers.

  • A life of greater fulfillment—with Spirit or without.
